Hello Everyone, I just wanted to take a minute to invite you to come on out to the Pine Knoll Shores Aquarium this March 14, 2009. Myself and other Captains/Guides along the coast have donated our time to help raise money for the Aquarium this year. I'll be "telling it all" about targeting speckled trout in NC. I might even hint on where our team pulled out the Coast's new record 3 trout tournament weight of 23.12lbs! Check out the link below for a list of Captain's and Topics and admission information.

1/17/09 Double Digit Reds in Single Digit Wind Chills!!!
The pic to the left shows the tackle we're using to make our slip cork rigs. First we use a bobber stopper string on the main line followed by a bead then, our slip cork. after you run your line through the slip cork tie it to a swivel. tie a 24in piece of 20 to 30lb flourocarbon to your swivel and put a small circle hook on the other end. Also, tie an overhand knot in the middle of your leader and crimp a split shot just above the knot. The knot will keep the split shot from sliding down to your hook. We use this rig throughout the fall and winter when using live bait on trout and reds.
Are You Crazy? That's what my crew and I heard Sat. Morning as we prepared to leave the dock. We had air temperatures at 12 degrees with wind chills dropping it into the single digits. But, my crew had made the trip from Charlotte, NC and wanted to go fishing! And, I certainly didn't want to let them down. So, all suited up and ready to go, we left the dock around 8am. We attempted to try some local creeks first and get out of the wind but,,, the extreme cold had most of the mainland creeks completely covered with an 1/8 to 1/4in of ice. so, we moved on to search the surf zone and some creeks near the inlets. Suprisingly, we even found ice in the creeks near the inlets. That's COLD! The first couple hours proved tough as the schools of reds i've recently located moved due to the temps. But, the Holcomb crew stuck with me and we eventually found a good school of smaller slot fish. These guys kept them coming to the net cast after cast for several hours on both artificial baits and live baits. Suprisingly, after a morning of scraping the ice off our fishing line after each cast... we wound up on an awsome bite and caught over 40 redfish for the day. A very enjoyable day guys. Thanks for sticking it out!

Extreme Redfishing Dates Available! FISH'N4LIFE
The Redfishing has been great so far this Winter. Both Capt. Mike Taylor and Myself have open dates for February... Weekend and Weekdays still available. The recent cold snap should be setting us up for some EXCELLENT sight fishing to massive schools of Redfish! when conditions are right expect to see thousands of reds and a typcial 4 to 6hr trip can produce 50 or more reds ranging from 20in to 30in. These are not unbacked claims! Check out our pictures and reports from the Winters of 05,06,07 in the archives of the fishing reports section (to the right side of this page). Call ASAP for open dates

1/4/08 Swansboro Redfish and Speckled Trout!
Well, today was a repeat of the past few days. With Tony Turner's group onboard we eased out in the dark heading out to our first spot. Alot of reds have come inside the backwaters with the last few days of warming weather. Just a few minutes into looking... we found a school of Reds and over the course of three hours we caught and released about 30 Redfish. We tried for some trout today and although we didn't get the numbers we had yesterday, we did land a couple of nice trout between 2 and 2.5lbs. Enjoyed having you onboard today guys!
After our trip was over, I went back out on the water scouting some more and taking advantage of the absolute slick conditions... I ran out along the beach and suprisingly, the surf had settled down to "cam" conditions. Although there was no sun, the water clarity was gin clear and I was able to run the surf and locate two large schools of Redfish. I played with them for a few minutes and wore My arm out fighting a mess of them before heading back into the backwaters. The water was very clear around Bear Inlet in the internal waters and I was able to see some speckled trout between 1 and 3lbs along the channel walls along Sander's Channel and surrounding Creeks. There was also a 1/4mile long school of 3 to 4in.. menhaden stretched from Bear Inlet all the way into Sanders Channel and another massive school in the ICW where Hammock's Beach Channel turns off. This is the most shad I've ever seen in the internal waters during January.

1/3/08 30 Redfish, 40 Speckled Trout!!!!
This morning I had some good ole boys onboard for a shot at some Reds and Trout... Well, the redfish made their showing again today as we worked a few places and worked them over to land 30 reds up to 27in. quickly in the morning and then moved on to some deep water that's been holding some specs... We spent about 3hrs to land about 40 trout today... nothing big but lots of fun and we were able to keep 17 for the dinner table! Great Job Guys... Go easy on them next time Joel! Ha ha....

1/2/09 Redfish Blitz!
This morning I had Dave H. and his son onboard as we set out looking for a Redfish bite. We spent some time looking just outside the inlet as well as the shallow backwaters today. We worked both Berkley Gulp 4in. Mud Minnows as well as live mud minnows. What a Day! We boated 45 Redfish from 18 to 27in. along with two speckled trout about 2lbs each and made it back to the dock by lunch time. Great Job Guys! The redfish are roaming the shallow mud flats behind the barrier Islands during the middle of the day with high sun. Sometimes they're in small pods and at times they're bunched up in large schools... These fish will often be very tight lipped and you'll need to keep some live mud minnows under slip corks or popping corks ready incase they turn down the artificials. Dudley's Marina is stocked up with mud minnows... The beauty of the mud minnows is that you can fill your livewell with water and store the boat in your yard for several weeks at at time with 4 or 5 dozen mud minnows and they will not require any aeration or food between fishing on the weekends... any you'll have them there incase you decide to go fishing... Call Dudley's and get some while he has them in stock! 252-393-2204

New Year's Day - PM Redfish in the Shoals!
1/1/09 Well, the new year brought below freezing temps today along with strong winds. The wind chill was about 18 to 20 degrees and after talking with my client today we decided that it probably wouldn't be the best morning. After getting some Honey To Do stuff finished I dropped the boat in the water at 2:30 to check out the surf and water clarity. A friend, Jamey Copeland, hopped onboard with me. The surf was pretty flat but the extreme low tides over the past week with all the winds have washed a lot of muddy water out the inlet and visibility was only a few inches. Regardless of the clarity all other conditions were perfect so we eased down the beach trying some of the outer shoals and quickly found a school of reds. We fished them for about an hour and landed 10 to 12 reds from 23in. to 28in. The fishing should only get better for January through March. Dates are filling fast. Both Capt. Mike Taylor and Myself will be putting clients on these schooling redfish all Winter. Contact us at (Jeff 252-764-2174 or Mike 252-725-2623) for availability.

12/30/08 Shallow Backwater Reds!
Today I had some regular clients, the Blacksheares, onboard for some Post Christmas fishing. The temperatures have been very warm for a week ranging from the upper 50's to 70 degrees. Some schools of reds have moved into the backwaters from the inlets and have been feeding pretty good. This morning we managed to find several schools of reds with the largest school of over 100 fish in a foot or less of water working a mud flat. We were able to land 21 reds, 1 speckled trout about 2 lbs., and a 2 lb. black drum by 1pm today and then called it a day. Great job today guys... awsome bite for late December in the shallow backwaters of Swansboro. The cold front upon us should move these fish back to the surf....
