1/17/09 Double Digit Reds in Single Digit Wind Chills!!!

The pic to the left shows the tackle we're using to make our slip cork rigs. First we use a bobber stopper string on the main line followed by a bead then, our slip cork. after you run your line through the slip cork tie it to a swivel. tie a 24in piece of 20 to 30lb flourocarbon to your swivel and put a small circle hook on the other end. Also, tie an overhand knot in the middle of your leader and crimp a split shot just above the knot. The knot will keep the split shot from sliding down to your hook. We use this rig throughout the fall and winter when using live bait on trout and reds.

Are You Crazy? That's what my crew and I heard Sat. Morning as we prepared to leave the dock. We had air temperatures at 12 degrees with wind chills dropping it into the single digits. But, my crew had made the trip from Charlotte, NC and wanted to go fishing! And, I certainly didn't want to let them down. So, all suited up and ready to go, we left the dock around 8am. We attempted to try some local creeks first and get out of the wind but,,, the extreme cold had most of the mainland creeks completely covered with an 1/8 to 1/4in of ice. so, we moved on to search the surf zone and some creeks near the inlets. Suprisingly, we even found ice in the creeks near the inlets. That's COLD! The first couple hours proved tough as the schools of reds i've recently located moved due to the temps. But, the Holcomb crew stuck with me and we eventually found a good school of smaller slot fish. These guys kept them coming to the net cast after cast for several hours on both artificial baits and live baits. Suprisingly, after a morning of scraping the ice off our fishing line after each cast... we wound up on an awsome bite and caught over 40 redfish for the day. A very enjoyable day guys. Thanks for sticking it out!
