11/08/09 WoW! What a Day! Trout, Reds, Black Drum, Flounder, Blues, and More!

Well, I don't know if there are enough words to express how awsome of a day I had with my crew of Ross Felton and Mark Foster onboard. I think Mark was on a role of good luck after bagging an 8point buck with a 17in spread on Sat. then bringing that luck with him as he drove down to the coast from Raleigh this morning. We left the dock around 8am with blue skys and mild temp.'s. We went really skinny this morning blowing over 10in. of water through ditches to get to our fish. We eased up on our first spot and within 4 casts our float darted under water and the bite was on! We spent the next hour with a strike about every other cast. We pulled 4 nice trout from 1.5 to 2.5lbs out and released over a dozen black drum from 3 to 5lbs and kept 4 for the grill. The tide was right and sun up perfect to hit the surf for some serious Extreme sightfishing to massive schools of redfish! 15min. of searching and we were looking at over 1500 fish. We spent the next couple hours positioning the boat in the breakers with double and triple hookups time and time again. These reds ranged from 5lbs to 12+lbs and we had several fish with 30 to 60 spots! On our way back to the dock we found a massive school of 3 to 4lb chopper blues destroying anything we tossed.

11/7/09 Ed Sewell Speckled Trout Tournament

Ed Sewell Speckled Trout Tournament- This annual event in honor of one of Swansboro's well know Trout anglers and business owners who passed away years ago was hosted by the Crystal Coast Fishing Association and organized by Chris Sewell. I can remember Mr. Sewell fishing the local waters each morning most Summer and Fall days as he would often pull up beside my father and I to show us his catch as we worked to fill our bushel baskets with clams or oysters. I always wanted to put down my bullrake and grab a rod after seeing those pretty 2 to 5lb Specs! Well, the tournament this year brought out over 20 boat (local anglers) to participate. With an absolutely beautiful bluebird day, anglers brought alot of speckled trout to the dock. The TWT big fish of just over 4lbs went to the well known team of Buddy and Jake Gainey. They also weighed in an aggregate of 18+lbs for their 5 fish! Buddy and his son are hardcore speckled trout fisherman that really put their time in on the water each Fall to keep track of these prized fish. Congrats guys! My boat had an enjoyable day of fishing. I fished this event with Dion Lynn, a good friend from the boro, and we started out the morning at 6:30 and had our five fish in the livewell by 7:30am. We continued working several holes and eventually boated 20+speckled trout (1.5 to 2.5lbs), 8 black drum (3 to 9lbs), and a couple of keeper flounder. The black drum bite got so good we had to put away the live shrimp to avoid them and still caught one on a jighead and a 9lber on a pink mirrolure! Back at the dock we managed to squeak out 6th place with 11.22lbs of Speckled Trout.

Well,,, the weather man usually messes up the weather for the worse... After Rescheduling my morning trip for another day because the 80% chance of rain and the 20mph SW winds we were supposed to have... The last minute weather forecast looked like the rain might hold off for a couple hours so some clients, Tim, Mike S. and his son Luke, that were nearby and were willing to change plans on short notice hopped onboard and we attempted to get 3 or 4hrs in before the winds picked up and the rain set in. We eased away around daybreak and our second spot offered up a couple 1 to 1.5lb Speckled Trout. We moved on to a third spot and picked up 4 more Specks from 1 to 2lbs along with a 24in Redfish that had 35 Spots! Everything we caught this mornig was on Berkley's Powerbait Shrimp. The tide started rising and we made our way to some creeks closer to the inlets and found some black drum. Using live shrimp we picked up 4 black drum from 3 to 5.5lbs, several small specks, and 3 grey trout from 12 to 15in. A Bad weather forecast wound up to be a decent morning and back to the dock by 10:45 when the wind began to pick up. Ross, sorry the weather man was wrong...maybe we shouldn't have cancelled... but the extreme redfishing wouldn't have worked as the surf was too choppy. We'll get you on them soon.

10/20-10/21 Trout Bite Continues!

I've spent the last couple afternoons on the water for short 4hr trips targeting speckled trout here in the Swansboro area. The fall migration of Trout has really picked up with the recent cold snap and extreme flood tides we experienced through last weekend and the first part of this week. With good friend and collegue, Darin C., onboard we eased out of Dudley's Marina late in the afternoon earlier this week and our first stop produced 6 really nice trout ranging from 1.75 to 3lbs. We moved on to our second stop and never had to move again. We stayed a short while and picked up 12 more specks with 10 from 1.5 to 3lbs. and only two small fish about 15in. Back at the dock at sunset after an enjoyable 3hrs of fishing! Awsome! I love the chill in the air and the thump of a speckled trout strike followed by the headshake on the surface!

Made the call to Darryl, our Producer of CFTV and got him onboard along with my good friend and highschool Buddy, Jason Guthrie. We spent about 3hrs attempting to put together a show on Swanboro Trout Fishing and provide our viewers with some timely trout info as this season begins. Well, we tryed a few spots and had a good time. We landed 12 speckled trout ranging from 1.5lbs to 3lbs and caught all fish on artificial baits! You don't need all those live shrimp..... But, I'll admit, it is addictive using a live shrimp and watching that float disappear. Keep your eye open and watch for this episode this coming Sunday if our producer is able to cut and piece in time... Otherwise it will air next Sunday. Also, in talking with Capt. Mike Taylor, he has been catching several limits of specks with each of his morning trips as well. Yesterday he had fish up to 5.5lbs here in the boro.
Call if you're interested in getting on some great Fall Speckled Trout Fishing!

10/12 NE Blow and Big Kings!

Mike got on a good King bite on Sunday and I couldn't stand not being there so.... this morning my crew and I left the inlet loaded down with big shad and made the run down the beach. About 15min. into the morning and we put up our first King about 15lbs. There were two 45min to 1hr bites today throughout the morning and we boxed some big kings with the largest in the mid 20's. Great fall bite and plenty of action. Should last throughout October!

10/10 Puuurty Black Drum!

Sat. 10/10 This morning I had an early morning trip with Jim M. and his two sons Matt, and Will. We loaded down the livewell with shrimp and started pounding out some holes with adjustable slip corks. We fished 6 holes and found quality fish on two of them. These guys had a ball and caught a mixed bag of a 6lb Redfish, 2lb Grey Trout, 5 Black drum from 2lbs to 6lbs, and a 4lb Sheepshead.

10/6 Redfish eat Scallops!

10/6/09 This afternoon I had good friend and client Rich Digulio onboard for a short evening trip looking for trout and reds. The water clarity wasn't the best after all the rain but we managed to pick up a mixed bag of Speckled Trout, Pompano, Sea-mullet, Redfish, Flounder, and some hogfish. But, Rich definately wins the once in a lifetime award for his redfish. We were working this shallow grass flat just as the sun disappeared over the horizon and we could barely make out the topwater bait Rich was working. He had a redfish blow up on his bait but didn't hook up... the fish followed the bait almost to the side of the boat then, blew up again and hooked up... screaming line off. When Rich got this fish to the side of the boat we netted him and to our surprise one treble hook was in the fishes lip but the second treble was in the mouth of a scallop!

IFA Redfish Tournament MHC, 1st Place Main Event! Ranger Cup Award! 1st TWT AGG. 2nd Place TWT Big Fish!

Click Tournament Results Click
Capt. Mike Taylor and myself went into the tournament expecting a tough day of fishing with just a few fish. Prefishing didn't offer up any good spots, just some scattered fish in a couple locations. The weather wasn't going to make it any easier. But, we stuck with our crazy game plan and we wound up on some fish... wound up catching about 20 Redfish ranging from 24in. to 30in. and were able bring a 26 3/4in and 26 15/16in fish to the scales. Unfortunately, our larger fish died from a deep hookset so, we weren't able to cull him... we had to take a 1/2lb deduction on our aggregate weight and didn't expect to place well.... to our suprise we still had first place by just over a pound! A bad weather day with a great turnout! Team Crystal Coast Graphics/ NC Charterfishing earned first place in the main event, the Ranger Cup Award, first place TWT Aggregate, and 2nd place TWT big fish! Mike and I would like to thank our sponsors for their support. A big thanks to Chris Ulmer (Crystal Coast Graphics), Ron Enslen of Ranger Boats, Yamaha Outboards, Collin's Inc., Dudley's Marina, and definately our families for putting up with our fishing so much!

Monday 9/14 Redfish and Flounder

I left Dudley's this afternoon just after 3pm with the owners of Crystal Coast Pools and Spas onboard for a variety of inshore/backwater fishing all packed in a 4hr trip! Opi, Elizabeth, and Dean got an ear full today as I've been known to talk too much sometimes... (bad gift inherited from mom) Anyway, we had fun with some Redfish on our first stop working a shallow grass flat... even boated two nice flounder in the same area. We made a quick move to take advantage of a rising tide to try for some speckled trout... but the water was mucky and all we picked up were two small specs. So as we were passing the inlet...we noticed how calm it was... with an hour and a half left in our trip we decided to go on out and hit a nearshore ledge for flounder. We worked Berkley Gulp Baits on Bucktails and with about 45min. of fishing were able to land 10 flounder and kept 4 nice fish up to 2lbs before heading back to the dock around 7pm! Great job today guys!

Here's a couple of Snap shots from the day! It was Capt Mike Taylor, Capt. Rob Koraly, and myself (Capt. Jeff Cronk) onboard.

9/12 Spanish Blitz!!! Flounder!!! Redfish!!!

9/12/09 Morning Trip- With Tom Page and crew onboard this morning and some very purrrty weather... we filled up the livewell with baits and busted through the inlet wide open!!! We stopped on our first spot in hopes of some of those 3 to 6lb Spanish Mackerel... and the first thing to hit the baits was a Hound fish. We almost let but about 20 min. into it we hooked up a 4lb Spanish on our light spin tackle... so, we hung out and as the morning progressed, so did the bite. We had about 30 knockdowns and boated 13 Spanish from 3.5 to 5.5lbs! We made a couple of quick pit stops and landed 6 flounder, keeping three with the largest at 4lbs! Super job folks!

Afternoon Trip-- 12:30pm and I was off on the 2nd trip of the day. Bill Stocks and his crew wanted to focus on the backwaters. Our first stop got us hooked up with a couple of nice Redfish... then, the tide rose over everything! We made a few stops but our fish were way back into the deep grass. We persisted and were able to land a couple more reds before we headed back to the dock around 4:30pm
