11/7/09 Ed Sewell Speckled Trout Tournament

Ed Sewell Speckled Trout Tournament- This annual event in honor of one of Swansboro's well know Trout anglers and business owners who passed away years ago was hosted by the Crystal Coast Fishing Association and organized by Chris Sewell. I can remember Mr. Sewell fishing the local waters each morning most Summer and Fall days as he would often pull up beside my father and I to show us his catch as we worked to fill our bushel baskets with clams or oysters. I always wanted to put down my bullrake and grab a rod after seeing those pretty 2 to 5lb Specs! Well, the tournament this year brought out over 20 boat (local anglers) to participate. With an absolutely beautiful bluebird day, anglers brought alot of speckled trout to the dock. The TWT big fish of just over 4lbs went to the well known team of Buddy and Jake Gainey. They also weighed in an aggregate of 18+lbs for their 5 fish! Buddy and his son are hardcore speckled trout fisherman that really put their time in on the water each Fall to keep track of these prized fish. Congrats guys! My boat had an enjoyable day of fishing. I fished this event with Dion Lynn, a good friend from the boro, and we started out the morning at 6:30 and had our five fish in the livewell by 7:30am. We continued working several holes and eventually boated 20+speckled trout (1.5 to 2.5lbs), 8 black drum (3 to 9lbs), and a couple of keeper flounder. The black drum bite got so good we had to put away the live shrimp to avoid them and still caught one on a jighead and a 9lber on a pink mirrolure! Back at the dock we managed to squeak out 6th place with 11.22lbs of Speckled Trout.
