12/28/05 6 Hr Trip for Trout and Stripers-- Well we decided to go check out the striper situation since the weather had layed out. On the way out we stopped at the jetty to throw a few trout in the livewell for livebait. 20 min. and 7 trout later we took off for the shoals. We scoured the shoals to no avail... so we took out the trolling gear and headed for the east side of lookout and worked our way all morning toward Drum Inlet. Along the way we came across this big brute (20ft Basking Shark) in 40ft of water. We worked several schools of grey trout and spots/croakers only to catch horndog after horndog... heading back to the shoals we found some menhaden and put about 50 in the live well to use lightlining. We got back into shallow water and got an awsome hookup on the lighttackle with a 4in. Rapala- XRap. Fought the Striper for about 5 min. and he wound up spooling 200 yds. dummy me didn't want to lift the anchor as we were in a small school of fish... I played him and wound up losing a bigen today! We had 2 more fish on almost immediately, one on the x-rap and one slammed a 7in. pogie on the light line... crew pulled the pogie before it got a chance to swallow the bait (circle hook). Oh well! a few fish but some bad luck today. Hey, did manage to catch 30ct. Shrimp in 30ft of water on the East Side of Cape Lookout. Who'd of thought....
