Breaking Ice for Trout!

12/30/09 I was clientless this morning so I eased out just after daybreak by myself to try a spot I haven't hit in a while. The air temp was 27 degrees and the water temp in my spot was in the... well... the transducer wasn't reading well due to the skim ice across the bay (check out the photo). I eased up to the spot, put the power pole down and couldn't think about fishing an artificial bait unless the fish were willing to break the ice and hit the bait as it was dragged across the ice. So, I tossed a heavy float cork over the spot several times... broke the skim ice up a little... put a mud minnow on the hook... and tossed in the slushy hole... within 30 minutes I pulled these three trout (2.8lb, 3lb, 3.1lb) tossed several small trout back along with a few puppydrum, and had a solid 6lber to the side of the boat which broke the leader while attempting to grab the fish by the neck... (left the net in the back of the truck). It was upsetting but we catch quite a few 5 to 6lbers each year... if it had been an 8+lber I would've been crushed.

12/28/09 Windy fishing for Trout! 4lber!

This morning i had the pleasure of fishing with David Robinson of GSO along with his two sons David and John. We worked hard to find some places to get out of the 20+mph cold winds. The first stop provided NADA... the next few stops put us on some fish but we had to cull through about 30 trout to get some 2 to 4lbers worthy of the cooler. A little slower than usual but not too bad considering the intense winds.

12/12/09 Great Day of Trout Fishing out of Swansboro!

12/12/09 Today I had two clients and good friends onboard hoping to get on some Speckled Trout action. Dion and Derek stepped on the boat just before daybreak and we shot out into the dark and eased up on our first spot just after daybreak with the air temp at 34degrees and the sound water at 50 degrees. We were fishing shallow water and our fish didn't want to open their mouth. About 45min into non-stop casting we picked up our first fish and then it all picked up. We got on a steady bite with a strike about every 5th cast. About 1 out of every 10fish was a keep between 15in and 20in. We hit several holes that produced and a few that were dry. My crew fished hard and we headed back to the ramp around 11am having caught around 100 specs and managed 16 keepers from 1lb to 3.75lbs. Great job guys and congrats on the biggest today Derek!

12/6/09 Lots of Trout and Reds in the Cooold weather!

11/6/09
Man it was a cold one when my crew and I left the dock around 6am. We planned on starting out looking for some speckled trout in the backwaters while letting the sun get up to help locate some redfish later in the day. We made a short run to try out the trout fishing. It started real slow unlike last week's trout blizt. But, we stuck with it and about 4hrs of fishing we caught about 30 specs. We kept a dozen from 15in to 3.5lbs and released the rest. Suprisingly, we also picked up two flounder with one at 16in. We moved back toward the inlet around 10:30 and we had three of our four important factors set up perfect for Redfishing but, unfortunatley we didn't have the clear water to sight cast to our fish. So, we moved from shoal to shoal blindcasting and about 30min into it we struck gold! We spent several hours bending rods and releasing reds from 24in to 34in. We came upon a flock of small gulls working bait hard and beneath them was a massive school of thousands of Reds, big reds. Our largest was about 13lbs but capt. Mike got on the action and his crew boated one at 37in and between 18 and 20lbs! Awsome day of fishing! Great job guys! We fished 100% artificial baits today and the best trout bite came using Berkley Powerbait shrimp and all the reds hit Berkley 4in Gulp pogies and shrimp!
